Reconstructing the Source in Heavy Ion Collisions from Particle Interferometry
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hadronic oneand two-particle spectra provide for each particle species information about the phase-space distribution S(x,K) of the hadronic emission region [1]. Once reconstructed from the measured spectra, S(x,K) allows to distinguish between different dynamical scenarios of heavy ion collisions. It provides an experiment-based starting point for a dynamical back extrapolation into the hot and dense early stage of the collision, where quarks and gluons are expected to be the relevant physical degrees of freedom. Our reconstruction of S(x,K) is based on the hadronic oneand two-particle spectra

Emission times and opacities from interferometry in non-central Relativistic Nuclear Collisions
Understanding particle emission in relativistic nuclear collision is crucial in order to determine whether a phase transition to quark-gluon plasma has occurred. Particle interferometry was invented by Hanbury-Brown & Twiss (HBT) for stellar size determination [1] and is now employed in nuclear collisions [2–8]. It is a very powerful method to determine the 3-dimensional source sizes, lifetimes...
متن کاملParticle-particle Correlations and the Space-time Structure of Heavy Ion Collisions
The present status of the use of two-particle intensity interferometry as a diagnostic tool to study the space-time dynamics of intermediate energy heavy ion collisions is examined. Calculations for the two-proton and two-pion correlation functions are presented and compared to experiment. The calculations are based on the nuclear Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport theory.

Recent developments are summarized in the theory of Bose– Einstein and Fermi–Dirac correlations, with emphasis on the necessity of a simultaneous analysis of particle spectra and quantum statistical correlations for a detailed reconstruction of the space-time picture of particle emission. The reviewed topics are as follows: basics and formalism of quantum-statistical correlations, model-indepen...
متن کاملPhoton Hanbury-Brown–Twiss interferometry for noncentral heavy-ion collisions
Currently, the only known way to obtain experimental information about the space-time structure of a heavy-ion collision is through two-particle momentum correlations. Azimuthally sensitive Hanbury-Brown–Twiss (HBT) intensity interferometry can complement elliptic flow measurements by constraining the spatial deformation of the source and its time evolution. Performing these measurements on pho...
متن کاملParticle Interferometry in Heavy-ion Collisions
By measuring hadronic single-particle spectra and two-particle correlations in heavy-ion collisions, the size and dynamical state of the collision fireball at freeze-out can be reconstructed. I discuss the relevant theoretical methods and their limitations. By applying the formalism to recent pion correlation data from Pb+Pb collisions at CERN we demonstrate that the collision zone has undergon...
